Natural earth pigments are polymineral materials whose present composition may differ from the source because of selection, grinding, heating, mixing, binder incorporation, and later alteration. This study develops a structured method for separating these contributions and for stating which provenance and degradation claims are supported by available evidence. The material is represented by geological, technological, and degradation components linked to elemental, mineralogical, spectroscopic, microscopic, and colour observations. Provenance is expressed as probabilistic compatibility across source levels, whereas degradation assessment ranks classes of environmental exposure rather than reconstructing a unique history. Published data from Roussillon yellow ochres and commercial and historical green earths are re-analysed as proof-of-concept checks, and a literature-based Herculaneum application illustrates degradation reasoning. The ochre analysis shows that mineralogical and colour relations remain directionally stable under robustness checks and that wet sieving can shift measured composition without eliminating family-level compatibility. The green-earth analysis shows that commercial labels and bulk chemistry alone do not reliably establish celadonite–glauconite family membership, whereas structural and vibrational evidence provides stronger discrimination. The Herculaneum case demonstrates how thermal events and subsequent exposure can alter ochre states. The study provides a practical diagnostic sequence and defines the present limits of inference.

The opening of the Qiongzhou Strait during the Holocene was a significant geological event in the Beibu Gulf, profoundly influencing sediment provenance and ocean circulation systems. Due to the scarcity of geological records documenting this event, the understanding of regional Holocene sedimentary evolution has been constrained. To investigate the impact of this event on sediment provenance and ocean currents in the Beibu Gulf, geochemical analyses were conducted on sediment core SO-31 retrieved from the South China Sea. The sediments in core SO-31 were stratigraphically divided into three units based on vertical geochemical profiles, reflecting changes in sea level and shifts in sediment provenance within the study area. The Th/Cr vs. Th/Sc scatter plot for core SO-31 indicate that sedimentary materials primarily originated from the Red River during 11,400–7700 a BP, and a significant change in provenance occurred in the study region around 7700 a BP, characterized by increased contributions from the Qiongzhou Strait and decreased contributions from the Red River. This suggests that the opening of the Qiongzhou Strait significantly influenced the sediment supply to the central Beibu Gulf around 7700 a BP. These findings provide critical geochemical evidence for studying the Qiongzhou Strait opening event and enhance our understanding of Holocene sedimentary evolution and “source–sink” transitions in the Beibu Gulf.

Differentiation of 83 Scots pine climatypes by height growth at the age of 37 years in the provenance trial was done. Three groups of climatypes were distinguished as: fast-growing, moderate-growing and slow-growing. The research at the age of 20–25 revealed 13 climatypes of 27 from the fast-growing group as candidates to breed-populations. These climatypes are from Krasnoyarsk Krai, Irkutsk Oblast, Kemerovo Oblast, Murmansk Oblast, Karelia, and the Republic of Komi. At the age of 37 years they confirm the status of perspective climatypes in height growth, survival, and resistance to fungal pathogens as it was noted earlier (Kuzmina, Kuzmin, 2007, 2008). The average height of trees of these climatypes exceeds control height by 32 %. The moderate-growing group consists of 18 climatypes, five of them are candidates to breed-populations. The intensity of their growth was reduced but average height is at the level of control average value. The third group has the largest number of climatypes. After the inventory in 2013 two climatypes previously marked as perspective were added into the third group. Last years the intensity of their growth was significantly reduced because of disease caused by cenangium dieback at the 22–24 years old. So the rank status of studied climatypes in different age periods is significantly changeable because of different reaction to ecological factors. The analysis of annual height increments growth confirms that objective conclusions about selection of perspective climatypes could be possible only after 25 years old of pine.

This paper deals with the measurement and evaluation of pedunculate and sessile oaks on five provenance trial plots located in the forest regions Západočeská pahorkatina, Jihočeská pánev, Hornomoravský úval, Dolnomoravský úval, Bílé Karpaty and Vizovické vrchy at the age of 20 years. Height and diameter growth were measured and analysed and the quality of tree stems was recorded. Sampled seeds originated from certified stands for seed production located in the Hercynian and Carpathian regions of the Czech Republic. Differences between the two species result from their ecological requirements. A comparison of the two species indicates that pedunculate oak at young age grows better than sessile oak in its typical site conditions. Sessile oak grows relatively worse on the plots situated in floodplain site conditions because it does not tolerate the high levels of groundwater. But the differences were not statistically significant. Significant differences in growth parameters were confirmed within each species among plots and provenances. Large differences in stem shape quality were also recorded already in the early growth phase. In some provenances straight stems were present in up to 56% of the individuals, however, in others straight stems did not appear at all. The total results showed that some pedunculate and sessile oak provenances are more adaptable to site conditions and they suffer lower losses while achieving very good growth.

Abstract BackgroundLarge language models can generate fluent summaries of longitudinal medical records, but in high-stakes clinical settings, verification burden remains a barrier to trust. Existing provenance mechanisms such as document-level citations and section references often require manual search within long, fragmented notes, limiting their usefulness during time-constrained workflows for clinicians. ObjectiveThis study aimed to design and evaluate a sentence-level provenance interface (“click to inspect”) that enables rapid verification of AI-generated longitudinal medical record summaries at the level of individual statements. MethodsBetween November 2023 and January 2024, we conducted a formative usability study using remotely moderated usability sessions via Zoom to evaluate a web-based sentence-level provenance interface for AI-generated longitudinal medical record summaries. A convenience sample of clinicians was recruited through email outreach to academic and professional networks across the United States. Formative usability testing was conducted with 46 clinician interactions using synthetic longitudinal patient charts. Participants included medical students, residents, and attending physicians across multiple specialties, including internal medicine, dermatology, radiology, plastic surgery, anesthesiology, interventional radiology, obstetrics and gynecology, and family medicine. Usability was assessed using the System Usability Scale and net promoter score, alongside qualitative feedback. ResultsClinicians reported high usability (mean System Usability Scale score 86.25, SD 7.77; 95% CI 83.96‐88.54 from 46 participants) and a positive overall experience (net promoter score of 35; 22/46, 47.8% promoters; 18/46, 39.1% passives; and 6/46, 13% detractors). Participants described rapid access to supporting evidence as critical for trust calibration during first-pass chart review. Qualitative feedback identified friction in traditional citation-based interfaces and supported sentence-level inspectability as a low-friction verification mechanism. ConclusionsSentence-level provenance transforms AI-generated summaries from static narratives into interactive verification tools. An approach that enables rapid, selective inspection of individual claims during longitudinal chart review may reduce verification burden and support calibrated reliance in high-risk clinical contexts.

Non-infectious uveitis (NIU) comprises a heterogeneous group of immune-mediated disorders in which myeloid cells influence leukocyte entry, inflammatory amplification, tissue injury, resolution, and relapse. The conventional dichotomy of classically activated (M1) and alternatively activated (M2) macrophages does not adequately capture this functional diversity. This narrative review organizes the evidence along three complementary dimensions: cell origin, disease stage, and evidence provenance; therapeutic maturity is evaluated separately. Experimental data support distinct roles for resident retinal microglia, retinal perivascular macrophages, vitreal hyalocytes, uveal macrophages, and recruited monocyte-derived macrophages. Microglial major histocompatibility complex class II signaling appears to amplify locally restimulated T-cell responses, whereas depletion with a broad colony-stimulating factor 1 receptor inhibitor cannot be interpreted as microglia-specific. Perivascular macrophages are positioned to regulate antigen presentation and leukocyte entry at the blood-retinal barrier, but their contribution to human NIU remains poorly defined. Recruited monocyte-derived macrophages contribute to inflammatory amplification in experimental autoimmune uveitis (EAU), while reparative and persistent states remain stage dependent. Human ocular fluid and single-cell studies provide direct observations of inflammatory myeloid states but rarely establish ontogeny or causality. In ankylosing spondylitis-associated acute anterior uveitis, cluster of differentiation 14-positive and intercellular adhesion molecule 1-high (CD14+ICAM1-high) monocytes showed trained-immunity-like transcriptional, functional, epigenetic, and metabolic features, with a computationally inferred transition toward macrophage states in aqueous humor. Clinically, tumor necrosis factor blockade provides the strongest therapeutic evidence. Janus kinase inhibition has randomized phase 2 support, whereas interleukin-6, interleukin-1, P2X purinoceptor 7, chemokine, inflammasome, metabolic, and reparative strategies remain less mature or are not myeloid specific. Progress will require phenotype- and stage-matched studies that combine longitudinal ocular and blood sampling with cell-resolved biomarkers, target engagement measures, and experiments involving delayed treatment in complementary animal models.

Persian Maple, Acer velutinum, has a wide distribution in Hyrcanian forests. In this investigation, a provenance test (two years) was conducted with the open-pollinated seeds of seven populations collected from different altitudinal gradients. In the first year, all populations' seedling height and diameter/height ratio decreased significantly. However, no significant difference in collar diameter was detected in the populations. Seedlings from the populations of the lower altitudes (1200m). The productivity in the first year indicated that some populations originating from the middle altitudes had higher production. In contrast, during the first growing season, there were no significant differences in survival rate among the various origins. In the second year, the seedlings originated from the middle altitudes as well as the local province (cite the elevation) had the highest survival rate. To minimize the mortality rate, we categorized four altitudinal groups and recommended restoring the genetic type of coverage of the original forest, using the seed from the same zone, because seeds from other zones have increased mortality.

Two provenance tests in North-Eastern Bulgaria have been studied, whose purpose is to test the response of beech provenances from Southern Germany to the drier and warmer climatic conditions in Bulgaria, in order to predict how they would perform in a warming and drying climate. The provenance tests were established in the spring of 2010 in the area of the Varbitza and Kipilovo Forest Services with 2-year-old seedlings in a 2 x 1 m scheme in 3 replications. Four provenances of common beech were studied - 2 German (Silberbach and Ebersdorf) and 2 Bulgarian (Petrohan and Berkovitza). On the 12th year after afforestation, an inventory and measurements of the height and root collar diameter were carried out. The results were processed statistically by applying one and two-factor analysis of variance, as well as Tukey’s test for multiple comparisons. A higher survival rate was found in the provenance test in Kipilovo. The Bulgarian provenances Petrohan and Berkovitza were characterized by better growth in height in both provenance tests, and in root collar diameter - provenance Petrohan. Provenance Ebersdorf could be recommended for use in drier and warmer places in Southern Germany.

Provenance generated by different workflow systems is generally ex- pressed using different formats. This is not an issue when scientists analyze provenance graphs in isolation, or when they use the same workflow system. However, when analyzing heterogeneous provenance graphs from multiple systems poses a challenge. To address this problem we adopt ProvONE as an integration model, and show how different provenance databases can be con- verted to a global ProvONE schema. Scientists can then query this integrated database, exploring and linking provenance across several different workflows that may represent different implementations of the same experiment. To illus- trate the feasibility of our approach, we developed conceptual mappings be- tween the provenance databases of two workflow systems (e-Science Central and SciCumulus). We provide cartridges that implement these mappings and generate an integrated provenance database expressed as Prolog facts. To demonstrate its usage, we have developed Prolog rules that enable scientists to query the integrated database.

Absorption and scattering coefficients for the Jerlov optical water types, taken from the primary literature with the provenance of every value recorded. Values that a published table got wrong are flagged rather than silently repaired, and quantities the data do not determine are refused rather than guessed. Twenty-one entries are documented, eight of them confirmed defects in the source literature: duplicated rows in Solonenko & Mobley (2015) Table 7, a transcription error in the small-particle scattering coefficient that propagated into their published coefficients, a Data Availability Statement that gives the DOI of an unrelated dataset, and a reprint whose stated unit is out by a factor of ten. Three further entries were open questions that obtaining the 1968 first edition settled. The same Jerlov water type is in circulation with beam attenuations differing by a factor of five, which is why every coefficient here carries the source it came from. Every shipped table can be regenerated from its primary source by the scripts in tools/, and each generation step checks the result against the equations of the paper it came from. The package computes the direct and veiling components along a horizontal underwater path, converts spectra to CIE XYZ, sRGB, or the response of an arbitrary camera or set of photoreceptors, gives the Jerlov type that typically applies in each 10 m layer down to 200 m and carries the downwelling irradiance down through those layers, integrates photosynthetically available radiation (PAR) with depth and finds the depth at which it falls to 1 percent, ranks the Jerlov types by their distance from a measured Kd spectrum, carries the Paulson & Simpson (1977) shortwave penetration parameters used by ocean circulation models, converts a backscattering sensor's single-angle reading into the backscattering coefficient, and carries Petzold's (1972) volume scattering functions for eight measured ocean waters.

Perfect Provenance in High-Dimensional Lattices Abstract In high-dimensional lattice calculations—such as quantum mechanics or multi-dimensional transport simulation—explicit matrix tracking collapses due to the curse of dimensionality. Furthermore, standard algebraic simplifications like A + B - A \Rightarrow B create a catastrophic loss of history, completely obliterating information provenance. We introduce a novel, fully verified computational architecture in Lean 4 that models multidimensional integer-linear transport operators (u^\alpha \partial_i) and tracks their algebraic lineage without a single sorry axiom. By imposing explicit discrete topologies (\tau = \bot), we construct rigid topological homeomorphisms (bracketHomeomorph and graphHomeomorph) between syntactic expression trees and active evaluation states. This structural decoupling guarantees that exact metadata addresses, structural chiralities, and geometric source configurations are completely preserved—even when the underlying Lie algebraic value simplifies to zero. Finally, we bridge this abstract framework to hardware-computable execution by implementing a finite-support infrastructure (Finsupp), dropping evaluation complexity from infinite functional spaces to sparse, live coordinate loops. The resulting hybrid engine provides an infallible framework for optimized, zero-information-loss computing across arbitrary geometric dimensions (d=256). As a formally verified Lean 4 compiler architecture for multi-dimensional geometric lattices, it eliminates history loss during algebraic simplification. While standard numeric compilers erase data lineage when expressions evaluate or cancel out, this engine preserves full structural provenance by enforcing a rigid topological homeomorphism between syntactic expression trees and physical execution states. By transitioning from abstract maps to finite-support functions (Finsupp), we achieve live runtime capability on sparse coordinate grids. The resulting hybrid framework guarantees exact origin and metadata recovery at zero runtime performance cost, serving as a blueprint for infallible, fully trust certified, computational physics pipelines.

The features of the Sc, Cr, Co, Ni, Th and rare earth elements distribution in the black shales of the Riphean Murav’inskaya and Velsovskaya formations in southern part of the Lyapin-Kutim anticlinorium (Northern Ural) are analyzed. The contents of the listed elements in 20 samples of black shales are determined by the ICP-MS method at the IGG UB RAS (Ekaterinburg). Samples of the shales of the Murav’insky formation are selected from the outcrops along the river Vels, below the mouth of Pos’mak River, as well as along Pravaya Rassokha River. The selection was made from outcrops more or less evenly distributed over the studied area. The shales of the Velsovskaya formation were studied from the drilling holes in the basin of Sur’ya Vagranskaya River, as well as in outcrops along the Sibiryakovskaya Martayka and Pravaya Rassokha rivers. In the Sc-Th/Sc diagram, the data points of the black shales of the Murav’inskaya and Velsovskaya formations are fairly compact located between the points of the average composition of the Archean and Proterozoic granites, on the one hand, and tonalite-trondhjemite-granite (TTG) associations of the same age. Approximately the same distribution of the data points of the black shales of these formations can be seen in the La/Sc-Th/Co and La/Sm-Sc/Th diagrams. The average value of ΣРЗЭ in black shales of the Murav’inskaya formation is 316 ± 90 ppm, in the shales of the Velsovskaya Formation it is noticeably lower - 200 ± 47 ppm. The black shales of the Murav’inskaya Formation are substantially enriched with light lanthanides (La/Yb)Nmean = 40, and noticeably depleted by heavy lanthanides, (Gd/Yb)Nmean = 5.4. For the black shales of the Velsovsky formation (La/Yb)Nmean = 22, (Gd/Yb)Nmean = 3.1. This ones and a number of the other data make it possible to conclude that the complexes of rock-sources of fine aluminosiliciclastics for black shales of Murav’inskaya and Velsovskaya formations had a rather specific composition. On the basis of a comparison of the geochemical features of the black shales of the southern part of the Lyapin-Kutim anticlinorium and potential sources of fine aluminosiliciclastics, the conclusion is based that such rock complexes could be, from one side, the Archean and/or Proterozoic TTG associations and granites of the same age of the Eastern European platform, and, from another side, certain local rocks with high Cr contents and significant differentiation of REE, similar in composition to the products of kimberlite magmatism.

We measured saturation isothermal remanent magnetization (SIRM), coercivity of remanence (Hcr), and insoluble dust mass concentration (IDC) of 49 ice samples from Vostok and EPICA Dome-C ice cores (Antarctica) as a measure of magnetic properties of the aerosol dust trapped in the ice. Samples range in age from marine isotopic stage (MIS) 7 to 19 in EPICA Dome-C ice core and from MIS 1 to 11 in Vostok ice core. Data from ice samples were compared with 86 samples from possible source areas (PSA) from East Antarctica, including 11 samples from South America and New Zealand. Previous results from MIS 1 to MIS 6 found that magnetic properties of aerosol dust could be divided in two distinct groups characterized by high-Hcr and low-SIRMdust for glacial samples, and low-Hcr and high-SIRMdust, for interglacial samples. The new data from older ice samples highlighted several discrepancies from this expectation with significant differences between Vostok and Dome-C sites. Magnetic properties of Antarctic PSA sample show a large variability, however, PSA samples from Victoria Land and few other, have magnetic properties compatible with that of the glacial dust, or more precisely with samples characterized by high dust flux. The new data from Pleistocene ice and from PSA samples confirm South American and Antarctic provenance of the largest atmospheric dust load typical of glacial stages. On the other hand, we did not found any PSA sample with properties compatible with the highly magnetic samples (mostly from interglacial stages), which are characterized by low IDC. These samples from the oldest and deepest part of the cores revealed a more complex picture than previously outlined from the analysis of MIS 1–6, and show unusual magnetic properties which can be tentatively attributed to post-depositional alteration occurring into the ice.
